I recommend users enable the Mollum module

Mollum is a free service to sign up for, when signed up you get a set of public and private API keys to use in your Mollum plugin. It's proven very effective on my Drupal based sites for finding and stopping spam registrations and content input on the sites.

I highly recommend it.
