As the average connection speed of the internet increases, so too does the use of multimedia content on more and more web sites. Today, with broadband connection speeds being so common in so many areas almost all news and information based web sites use multimedia content for their stories and articles, or at least have a multimedia version available.

Using multimedia is much more than just digitizing some media and throwing it out there. There are many different formats to choose from, options of players within those formats, production consistencies from clip to clip to maintain, checking the capabilities of your average visitor and more.

I generally lean toward Flash players due to the wide use of the Flash plugin, it's widely supported on most operating systems and within most browsers. It also "streams" well, which means, it will usually play the least choppy of many formats, downloading some, starting playback and downloading the rest while it's playing back.
